The Best Kept Secret About Job Searches

It’s the holiday season, and I like the majority of you sat down to an amazing meal with my family and shopped like crazy the rest of the weekend. It was wonderful to have a few days to relax.

This time of year is about family and friends as it should be. The interesting piece, though, companies aren’t taking a break. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. It’s the best time of year to apply for a job! And, the hiring process is typically shorter than any other time of year.

I think I heard a few people groan. Just one more thing to do, one more item added to the list, and how in the world are you going to accomplish a job search and applications while basting a turkey, feeding the kids, putting up the tree, laundry, groceries, and everything else that occurs during the holidays?

Don’t despair and remember you’re not in this alone.

Is your LinkedIn ready? I’ve mentioned it before, but a staggering 97% of hiring managers fill positions directly from LinkedIn. And, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but a great professional photo with a friendly smile will open doors for you. If you have a picture of your pet with a Santa hat, I highly recommend you change it.

Connect, connect, connect. You can connect with new people on LinkedIn just by spending approximately 15 minutes a day. When you need a break from cooking and shopping, hop on the computer and reach out to others in your industry.

Apply online for three solid jobs a day. This can be added to your schedule instead of watching a sitcom or reading a novel. Once you’ve applied online, the next application will come easier, just don’t forget, if your resume isn’t ATS friendly the system will kick it out, and you will never know the difference.

It’s the season to mingle so make yourself some networking business cards for parties. When you meet someone, hand them your card that will include your name, profession, and contact information. I don’t recommend walking around simply handing them out to everyone, but take a few minutes to make connections. People are more willing to help when there are friendly smiles and warm personalities involved.

Is your resume ready? Is it accomplishment focused and can you answer the hiring manager’s questions within 6 seconds? If not, hire a professional resume writer to take the stress off you.

Are You Happy With Your Career?

I’ve read some fantastic articles concerning what we would tell our younger self and possibly do differently in life. After taking some time to reflect I identified my frustration during those years and my career path, but it was more than that. I realized that I had lost my goals completely.

I was a single mother of two for almost ten years, and it was the hardest job I ever had. I was consumed with day-to-day living, food on the table, and shoes for the kids; I lost my way concerning a career path. I worked two jobs, and there just wasn’t enough time and energy left for what I wanted. Even if I had figured it out, I needed guidance. I needed someone to believe in me and give me a boost in the right direction.

I realize many of us choose a career due to an experience or experiences in our lives. It took additional time for me to find my career path, but when I did, I could see where my passion for helping others stemmed from. My passion is to help others land a great job, advance their careers, earn more money, and be happy. I struggled with all of those things and needed someone during those years in my life to give me hope and stable direction.

I needed to see myself in a different light, be presented as a capable and intelligent person who could do an excellent job. Eventually, I did land the right job that led me to my own business. I now have the ability and training to help people where I struggled. We all realize that if you are not happy with your job it affects every aspect of your life including finances, health, and relationships.

In a nutshell, I would have told my younger self these things:

Your work experience is just as important as your education.
It is okay to focus on a career even while you have a family.
You can research a career, but it is when you are getting your feet wet that you gain valuable understanding and your passion lines up.
Reach out for guidance and help from a professional. This will help you streamline the process, gain clarity, increase your income, and reduce your job search time drastically, allowing you to reach your goals sooner.

Writing accomplishment based resumes is not just about words on a page, it is about bringing an individual to life on paper. This moves beyond listing job duties. This is about connecting people with the right job and right company. It is about boosting someone above the competition and preparing them for an interview through the process. A good resume is about bringing someone’s best self up front and center stage and finally being recognized for their talents and abilities. The right resume can change your life.

Common Resume Problems And How To Fix Them

Due to differences between computer systems and software compatibility issues, you will likely experience formatting issues that cause your Microsoft Word résumé to look different from the Adobe Acrobat PDF file of your résumé.

This is normal in Microsoft Word as the software adapts to the printer and formatting settings on the recipient’s system. Most employers and recruiters are equipped to make the necessary changes to get your file to work with their systems. (If they express formatting concerns to you, you can offer to send them an Acrobat Adobe PDF instead.) Because each user’s system is different, I cannot provide technical support.

I recommend copying the files onto your hard disk and also creating a backup (on CD, DVD, or flash drive). For confidentiality reasons, do not copy these files onto your employer’s computer system.

Using Your Adobe PDF File

You will not be able to make changes from this file; however, if you open it, you will be able to print a copy of your résumé that can be used as an “original” and printed on résumé paper, or the PDF can be used for producing high-quality photocopies, if printed on a laser printer. Double-click on the PDF file. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it for FREE from www.adobe.com.

Using Your Microsoft Word Résumé

First, open Microsoft Word on your computer. Then, choose “Open” from the “File” menu and locate the file. Make any changes necessary to correct font substitution and line spacing problems. (See below.) Note: You must have the Microsoft Word software application installed on your computer to manipulate the Word file.

Common Fixes to Problems with Your Word Résumé

After saving the file to your hard drive, open Microsoft Word FIRST. From the “File” menu, choose “Open,” and select the file from where you saved it on your computer.
For font substitutions, highlight the affected text and choose a font from your computer system to use instead. If the font that was substituted is too big (for example, your one-page résumé now runs 1-1/2 pages), go to the “Edit” menu and choose “Select all.” Then choose a smaller font (for example, Times New Roman). See if that fixes the issue.
If the résumé is running just a couple lines onto an additional page (or pages), adjust the document margins. (If the existing margin is 1 inch, change it to 0.9 inches and see if that makes a difference.) If that doesn’t work, change the margins again or choose a smaller font.

Sending Your Résumé as a Microsoft Word E-mail Attachment

Open your e-mail program. Address an e-mail and indicate in the body of the e-mail “Attached is my résumé, prepared in Microsoft Word. If you would prefer to receive my résumé as a text-only file, please contact me.”

Click on the icon to “attach file” and select the file.

Using Your ASCII (Text-Only) Résumé

This is the version of your résumé you should use when you are using a career website that asks you to paste in a copy of your résumé. Have your text-only file open (first open your word processing program or text editor, then choose “open” from the “file” menu). Copy the text from your résumé and paste it into the space provided on the website.

Why Do I Need My Résumé In Multiple Formats?

As a service to my clients, I provide three formats of the final resumes.
I’m often asked which resume is best in particular circumstances. Here is a brief overview of the formats you will receive, and how each is used:

• The Microsoft Word format is the most versatile. It is an editable document, so you can make changes to your address and contact information at any time. This format is best used when your résumé is requested by a hiring authority or recruiter, and can also be uploaded to career websites when a Microsoft Word (or .doc or .docx) file is requested. Most applicant tracking systems can read Word-formatted documents, as long as they do not contain graphical elements such as columns, lines, tables, or charts.

• The ASCII text format is required for submission on many online websites. This is the format you will use when you’re required to copy-and-paste your résumé into a text block. The ASCII format is designed for this request, as it removes all formatting problems.

• Adobe Acrobat PDF. This format cannot be edited, but provides you with an original résumé file that retains all of the formatting and fonts as it was originally designed. Unless you need to edit the Microsoft Word file, this will be your best bet for printing résumés to submit by snail mail and in person. Some applicant tracking systems can accept PDF files; however, make sure that is the case before uploading the document. The system does not typically read the PDF format well.

How Do You Ask For A Higher Salary?

If you’re getting a job offer — and salary discussions usually don’t happen unless you’re a serious candidate — negotiation is an expected part of the process.

What’s the worst that can happen? You may not get all that you’re asking for. You may only get some — but that’s more than you started with. It’s rare (extremely rare!) that a job offer would be rescinded simply because you ask for more money.

Have a positive attitude about salary negotiations. Negotiation is basically a process which could benefit both parties. Understand your needs and those of the company. It is possible to reach a win/win solution. Don’t be aggressive or demanding when negotiating salary or a raise. Keep your tone friendly, civil and respectful.

Negotiating a higher starting offer initially can make a big difference in your pay over the long-term. In addition to getting more cash up front, your annual raises will also be based off a higher starting salary.

Let’s say you accept an offer of $30,000 for a job and are given annual pay increases of 3 percent. After five years, you’ll be making $33,765. On the other hand, if you negotiate a starting pay of $33,000 (a 10 percent increase), after five years, your pay will be $37,142. The individual who started at $30,000 made $159,274 during those five years; the person who negotiated a starting salary of $33,000 made $175,191 — a difference of $15,917.

Research

When you’re buying any major item (house, car, flat screen television), it’s important to do your homework and find out the value of the item. It’s also important to do your homework when negotiating a salary or a raise.

Research the salary for your position, level of experience, and industry. In addition to online salary sites, you can gather information from your professional or trade association.

Research the prospective employer and its salary structure. If possible, talk to current or former employees. Alumni of your college or university who hold similar positions or who are employed by the same company may provide you with useful information. (LinkedIn can be an excellent source of contacts for this.)

What Is the Secret Ingredient Hiring Managers Are Searching For?

I hated interviewing for a job. I got nervous and with a fair complexion, when I blush, there is no hiding it. I can’t tell you how many times I walked into an interview, realized I was chewing gum, and swallowed it while the next question was being asked. Some people are confident and breeze right through an interview, that wasn’t me for a very long time.

During the years I was a recruiter I found myself on the opposite side of the interview table. I was part of the group who interviewed for internal candidates, and the first few times I did it, my perception changed. I thought companies were looking for skills, communication, and education. Don’t get me wrong they absolutely are, but there is a major ingredient people forget about or don’t realize.

We had a group of 6-8 people in the group when we interviewed a candidate. I’m sure it was rather unsettling when the person walked in. I almost felt bad for them, but it was a high pressure position so you absolutely had to be able to deal with pressure and the unknown. The stress was crazy some days, the deadlines insane, and it was mandatory that everyone did their part.

The majority of the interviews I was quiet and listened while my co-workers asked questions. I asked them as well, but not as many. I sat back and watched. I learned more about the candidate from using my instincts and watching their reactions to the questions my co-workers were asking. I knew if a candidate was going to make it or not before a decision was ever made and so do other hiring managers.

Through those experiences, I learned something important. I realized the other significant piece to the puzzle a hiring team is searching for. It is personality fit. What are your values? Morals? Are you a team player? What’s your work ethic? Do you play well with others in the sand box even when you don’t like someone?

It is a key part of the hiring process. It moves beyond words and takes insight and instinct to identify the right fit. However, it’s a two-way street. If you’re qualified for the job, but not hired, could it be the simple reason that not one size fits all? Not every person is the right fit for every company? Not every job is right for every applicant?

So, what is the key ingredient that can land you the job? Your character and people with good instincts will spot it within minutes. However, as the person being interviewed you need to do the same. You don’t want a boss that yells at you and a company full of people who don’t understand what team means.

SEPTEMBER IS INTERNATIONAL UPDATE YOUR RESUME MONTH

To cultivate the positioning that will help you reach your career goals, you must understand and be able to communicate what makes you exceptional and compelling. You must find a way to stand out in a crowded job search. If you’re not known for something, you won’t be known for anything. One size does not fit all.

Finding a job is a lot like dating — it’s about finding a match between two parties (you and the company). It’s not just about money — although that is important. It’s also about helping the company meet a need that it has.

Companies hire because of their needs. This is true for all jobs — from entry-level administrative positions to the CEO’s job.
Understand the emotional motivation behind the job opening. What problem is the company trying to solve? Solving the problem can be about saving time, or building customer relationships. However, it’s crucial that you position yourself to solve their problem.

The question you want to answer for the employer is, “Why should you hire me?” When employers are hiring, they really want to know: “Why should I choose you instead of someone else?” Positioning is an important part of answering this question. You can’t be all things to all employers, so you need to figure out what sets you apart.

Personal positioning is unique to you. Figure out what makes you different. Consistency in your messaging will help you throughout the job search and interview process.

You need to express: “I am this.” Someone who is reading your résumé or LinkedIn profile should be able to recognize you in it.
The most difficult part about positioning is sounding original. Be specific about what distinguishes you. Your positioning is not your job title. Also, if your position could be said about almost anyone with your same job title, it needs work.

It’s important for a job seeker to stand out from the pool of applicants in order to receive serious consideration as a candidate. Personal positioning allows you to establish a clear message of who you are, the experience you have, and how you can be an asset to the employer.

Make sure your personal positioning aligns with your target company’s wants, needs, and/or values. Remember: Employers hire for their reasons, not yours!

You have to get the reader’s attention quickly. Your positioning is often the first impression an employer has of you, so make it count! (And speaking of first impressions, remember that how you dress is also part of your personal positioning.)

Benefits of Positioning
The ability to communicate “why you” is important in the job search. It can help you stand out from other job candidates. It can make you memorable. You want the interviewer to say, “Oh, I remember (him/her)!”

You will also use your positioning in many ways throughout your job search. Your LinkedIn Headline can be your personal position tagline. Your tagline can also be used on your résumé and as your tagline on your Twitter account. It can also be used as the subject line in an email to a prospective employer, hiring manager, or recruiter.

Your full positioning statement can be included in your LinkedIn Summary section, worked into the Qualifications Statement or Summary on the résumé, or incorporated in your cover letter. When networking, your positioning statement can be the answer to the question, “What do you do?” In an interview, your personal position can be used when asked, “Tell me about yourself.”
Knowing your skills and professional qualifications — and being able to articulate them — will also help you navigate applicant tracking systems (ATS).

Position yourself effectively to attract connections, opportunities, and job offers.

How to Develop Your Positioning
To identify how to position yourself, it helps to examine a couple of key issues:

What is the Company’s Need? What specific problem are they trying to solve with this job? Are they trying to make money? Save money? Save time? Keep existing customers? Acquire new customers?
What are your Core Abilities? What special abilities do you possess that separate you from other candidates for this position?
What are your Values? What is your belief system (behavior and ethics) that is inherent to you? Does this set you apart?
What is your Connection to the Company’s Need? Do you possess something special that solves your target employer’s problem?
Be aware of the kind of work you are willing to do, and the kind of work you don’t want to do. Make a list your likes and dislikes. Most of the time writing this list offers clarity.
Look to your work history for clues to your positioning. What in your work history did you do to make things better? Look for instances where you showed leadership and accomplishments.
Check out your existing online profile. What comes up when you Google yourself? What is your social media presence? What are you known for online?

Begin with the end in mind: What job do you want? Then figure out what qualities, attributes, and skills are required for success in that job. Do you possess them? How can you demonstrate that?

7 Keys To Position Yourself For Success In Your Job Search

If your goal is to get a new job, here are seven things you need to do to prepare yourself for your job search.

Update your résumé. While ideally your résumé is customized for a specific job, having an up-to-date résumé targeted for a specific “type” of position is the next best thing. So if you’ve taken on additional responsibilities in your current job, or you’ve changed your job target, or you’ve added new training or educational credentials, now is the time to talk with your résumé writer about updating your résumé. (And if you don’t have a résumé at all, now is definitely the time to put one together! A professional résumé writer can help!)
Develop — or update — your LinkedIn profile. A LinkedIn profile doesn’t replace the résumé…it compliments it. Someone looking for a candidate with your skills and experience might conduct a search on LinkedIn and find your profile. Or, someone in your network might be interested in recommending you, and forward your LinkedIn profile URL. So make sure you have a LinkedIn profile — and make sure that it’s updated. (Yes, this is something your résumé writer can help you with.)
Know what you’re worth: conduct salary research. One of the most often-cited reasons to consider a job search is to increase your salary. But how do you know what you’re worth? There is more salary research data available than ever before. Websites like Glassdoor.com and Salary.com can help you see how your current salary and benefits package stacks up.
Build your network. It’s estimated that 40-80 percent of jobs are found through networking. Networking effectiveness is not just about quality — although that’s important. It’s also about quantity. It’s not just about who you know. It’s about who your contacts know. Many times, it’s the friend-of-a-friend who can help you land your dream job. Grow your network both professionally and personally. You never know who will be the one to introduce you to your next job opportunity.
Manage your online reputation. More and more hiring managers are checking you out online before they interview you. What will they find when they type your name into Google? How about if they check out your Twitter profile? Or find you on Facebook? Now is the time to conduct a social media assessment and clean up your online profiles.
Define your ideal job. “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” That line, from Alice in Wonderland, is important to remember in your job search. If you don’t know what your dream job looks like, how will you know how to find it? What job title and responsibilities are you interested in? Do you want to work independently, as part of a team, or both? Do you like short-term projects or long-term projects? Who would you report to? Who would report to you? Answering these questions can help you define your ideal position.
Create a target list of companies you’d like to work for. Like your ideal job, you probably have a preference for the type of organization you want as your employer. Things to consider include: company size, industry, culture, location, and structure (public, private, family-owned, franchise, nonprofit, etc.). Once you’ve made your list, look for companies that fit your criteria.
